NOTTINGHAMSHIRE

The spirit of Robin Hood lives on in Nottinghamshire, but not much is left of the great Sherwood Forest where he and the Lads would romp. Near the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre at Edwinstowe there's the huge Major Oak - possibly a 1000 years old. Incredible!

Set in the lovely small town of Southwell, to the south east of Edwinstowe, is Southwell Minster with its wonderful Norman nave and an incomparable late 13th century chapter house featuring some of the finest medieval stone carving in Europe - faithfully representing the foliage of the now largely vanished Sherwood Forest.

Newstead Abbey was once Lord Byron's home, and still on a literary slant in Eastwood is a small museum commemorating the birthplace of author DH Lawrence.

In Rufford Country Park there are parts of a 17th century country house.
